2021-2022 — The Meet Cute

After getting vaccinated we were going to house parties – I was my friend Susan’s plus one, and Sam was Demir’s (birthday boy) coworker-friend. Demir has inadvertently introduced many pairs, at least three? Possibly millions?

Sam asked to see a picture of my kitty Blanche, and raved about his one-eyed cat GB. He wanted to play trivia with me and my friends, and he had a cute kitty? Green flags! We also bonded over dorky topics like the street improvements that Oakland had been making in our community (green stormwater infrastructure, bike lanes around the lake, etc.).

However, it wasn’t until we were invited back to the same apartment a few months later, for Demir’s roommate’s birthday party, that I got the courage to actually ask to join her for an activity outside of these mutual friends’ birthday parties (I invited myself along to the next time her trivia group met up). Our actual first date was a double-date-minus-one type situation, as she had confused what week her trivia group was meeting and was off by one week. In an attempt to not crush my aspirations of impressing her at trivia with my endless breadth of knowledge, she convinced Susan to join her for a relatively intimate evening of trivia at The Alley up on Grand Ave. We ended up finishing top 3, and won a set of Aviator Gin + two glasses (Susan took the gin, I took the glasses). However, we both (embarrassingly) did not recognize a picture of Naomi Watts from Mulholland Drive as part of a “picture round” and later agreed we needed to watch it together.

We also had an afternoon coffee date where we stopped at the (now defunct) Mudlab, and went for a walk through the Oakland botanical gardens. I remember it started to rain and we took shelter in one of the little seating areas in the Japanese garden while we talked.

Our first real date was a movie night to watch Mulholland Drive (we’re both fans of David Lynch. And our aforementioned embarrassment.) Sam had gotten popcorn and hot chocolate and his apartment was so clean and cozy, but he forgot it was dinner time and I needed a real meal. So we ordered mac and cheese (from Homeroom!). We kissed and the next day Sam tested positive for covid! I didn’t end up testing positive, but I did cancel my holiday plans and stay local. She didn’t drink any of the fancy hot chocolate I bought, though. She also continues to tell me (and others) that she was impressed with my interior design skills after visiting my apartment. Conveniently left that out of her account here.

While Sam wasn’t feeling well, we went on walks and I cooked him pozole, even though he couldn’t taste very much. We wore masks and kept our distance so that I could spend Christmas Day with family. I spent Christmas afternoon with my uncle Gordo/Guillermo/Willie G/etc, aunt Annette and cousin Larena/Lali/Lo in Richmond. I think she left her family’s place around 3 or 4 PM and I met her at her apartment for our first(!) Christmas together!

The next morning, Sam sent me a playlist full of love songs. I sent him one right back… Sam and I spent so much time together between Christmas and New Years, our winter walks in the rain felt magical, and we fell fast. (Yeah you were freakin’ obsessed with me dude, I was definitely cool as cucumber.) Sometimes on our walks, our steps would sync up and I would joke that even though he’s taller, he’s all torso because our legs are around the same length. We would kill it at a three legged race! Even now, when we’re very connected, our steps sync up.

Our first Valentine’s Day we went to the beach :)

2023 — The Injury

We talked about moving in together early on, but I was in a rent controlled apartment, and he only lived a 10 minute walk away. I started a new job in March of that year, and the moment my health insurance kicked in(?) I tore my meniscus while bowling (!!!) at the (again now defunct) Sea Bowl in Pacifica. So Sam was stuck coming back and forth to help me out while I was using crutches and having a hard time getting up and down the stairs to my apartment (and around the apartment, especially the first few days!) He took me to so many doctor’s appointments and even adjusted my blinds for me before I figured out I could use some old tongs to do it myself.

I went to physical therapy, and once my leg could straighten again (weird metric but ok?) they let me loose on the world. I was still hobbling around, but at least I didn’t need crutches. Sam would let me take his arm, even if he was grumpy or having a bad day.

We went to Minneapolis with Sam’s friends for his 30th birthday

2024 — The Move

After realizing that Sam would stick with me through a debilitating injury, I felt ready to leave my cheap (but leaky) apartment once and for all. We found a great place in a 1920s building that had recently been retrofitted to not collapse during an earthquake – perfect! The big windows look out onto a shared yard that was filled with beautiful orchids brought and maintained by long-time resident Mitzi. The only downside is that even though we’re on the first floor, you have to climb 3 flights of stairs from street level to get up to that first floor. My knee was still wonky and I was going up and down the stairs sideways during the move. My previous neighbor (shout out Wendy & Nicole!) recommended her trainer who had helped rehab her shoulder after an injury. Julie’s Garage Gym turned out to be only a couple blocks away! I started working with her soon after the move, and thanks to strength training with her, within a few months I was able to use our stairs normally.

We spent months getting our kitties adjusted to the new place – we kept the kitties in separate rooms and slept in the rooms with them to help with the adjustment. Sam would sneak over in the morning to cuddle and watch tiktoks together. We figured out that Sam doesn’t mind doing dishes, and I don’t mind putting away clean dishes, so it’s kinda weird that we’re complementary in our chore preferences. Sam also puts up with my forgetfulness and my organizing projects that don’t wrap up before bedtime. I had dreamed that our home would be filled with art and creativity, and sometimes when I’m working on a project and Sam is listening to records or practicing piano, I savor the feeling that we built that quiet joy together.

Sam helped make tamales for New Years 2023!

2025 — We got engaged!

Sam and I commissioned a painting from our friend (Mel Mitchell-Jackson) after we moved in together. The painting features my favorite trees – madrones – and Sam wanted to include some of Mel’s boulders and landscape too. Sam had the adorable idea to ask Mel the location of their source material so that he could propose to me there. Mel sent along the location that they had visited in the winter, but we had a busy spring, and summer was fast approaching. Sam picked the only weekend we were free in June and took me out to a high elevation on a hot day. After TWO switchbacks I wondered why my heart was beating so fast, “maybe I’m just nervous?” I made it a little bit farther to some shade and when I turned around to get water from Sam he told me I was beet red. He said that it was an early sign of heat exhaustion and we turned around.

We took the focaccia loaf he baked and the picnic he packed back home. After I cooled down with a shower and a 1.5 hour nap, we headed to the park a block from our place. We ate delicious cheeses and exchanged rings and talked about why we want to marry each other. Then I slept for like 12 hours, apparently recovering from both altitude sickness and heat exhaustion.

2026 — We got married - woo!

We have so many friends and loved ones that we felt overwhelmed at the idea of planning a giant wedding. So we asked our parents and sisters to join us for a small ceremony at Marin Civic Center (designed by Frank Gehry!)

We had an 11am appointment and Katalin picked up coffee and pastries for everyone to snack on. My dad and Gigi picked up a bouquet and we were ready - we stood in their garden with verdant Mount Tam behind the officiant. Sam had a hard time not laughing during my vows because my dad was filming close to us the whole time and circling us like a shark! Luckily during his vows, I shooed my dad away. Sam cried during his, then I cried, and we kissed several times before the officiant announced us, because it was just so sweet.

My amazing sister Sammi took so many cute photos of us after our ceremony. Then we had a delicious lunch at Sol Food, and I immediately got red sauce on my dress. Sam ran out to grab tide pens and helped me dab up the stains. We drove over the golden gate bridge to the SF Botanical Garden, where the temperature was at least ten degrees colder than Marin. Sammi took a ton more amazing photos before I told her she could stop working and enjoy the day. Still full from lunch, we headed to um.ma for our dinner reservation, and I proceeded to get more red sauce on my dress! At least I was locked and loaded with the tide pen this time. Before the meal I had been looking at their dessert menu, but the moment we finished our food, Sam and I looked at each other and knew it was time to wind down. We were so exhausted from a joy-filled day where we took countless pictures staring into each other’s eyes lovingly.

2027 — You’ll be there, right?!

We hope you’ll join us for our anniversary ceremony and party at my Aunt Maryann’s house, Posada Mariana in Cathey’s Valley. It’s close to Yosemite, so you’re welcome to bring your camping gear and make a weekend (or more) of it!
